So many women are living the dream! Around the world, more and more women are graduating from high school. More and more women are earning their Bachelor’s Degrees at universities. More and more women are walking across the stages of Graduate Schools with their Master’s Degrees. According to the Global Education Monitoring Report Gender Review 2018, created by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the percentage of countries around the world that have reached gender parity in all levels of education including pre-primary, primary, secondary, upper secondary, and tertiary has increased from 2000 to 2015. Woo Hoo! Brava! Felicidades! Please write “UNESCO Report, please.” in the comments below if you would like me to send you a copy of this fascinating study.
Congratulations, ladies, you now have more pieces of paper that show the world that you have consumed and processed the same information that your male counterparts have. That may have come across as a bit cynical. So, let’s look at this from another perspective. All humans are unique and have a unique purpose on this Earth, otherwise, there would be no reason for your existence. Marisa Peer, hypnotherapist, author, Uncompromised Life, conveys this message clearly, especially we take a moment to consider that the power of unique human beings lies in their ability to instinctually respond to their present circumstances.
Fast forward to the years after the academic degrees are earned (18-24), past the years when the professional promotions are achieved (24-28), and into the years when women are first giving birth (28-32). According to the OECD Family Database – Social Policy Division – Report SF2.3 on “Age of mothers at childbirth and age-specific fertility” updated 10 July 2018, the average age of women by western nation at first birth have increased by 4 years from 26 to 30 years old from 1970 to 2016. When all has been said and done in the professional arena, women are starting their families, and the conflict begins. Does their natural instinct tell them to stay with their children or return to the workforce? With increasing regularity, mothers have been sharing with me that they were amazing at their jobs, they love being mothers, and they don’t know how to make it all work going forward. One of my favourite conversations to have with mothers stems from their surprise at how clear they thought their purpose on Earth was dedicating themselves to their professions until they had children. In some cases, having one child was not the “kick in the pants” they needed to listen to their natural instincts of wanting to stay with their children.
So, perhaps, all was not said and done in their professional arenas after starting their families! They were quite keen to return to their previous employers after the conclusion of maternity leave, while their firstborns started attending a child care centre. By returning back to work, they have reengaged their previous identity as career women, for which they had spent 24-28 years of their lives preparing. After all, they had only spent a few years actively preparing to be a mother, depending on how long it took them to become pregnant. It took the birth of their second child a few years later still for them to gain the mental or emotional support of their natural intuition that actually, if we didn’t mind, they really would like to continue to care for their children directly, rather than return to the workforce, because this just feels right now. Woo Hoo! Brava! Felicidades!
What a beautiful and brilliant conclusion! Ladies, you have now taken ownership of one of the elements of your instinctual nature that makes you unique. As a mother, you are fulfilling a part of your worldly purpose that surprised even you! Now what are you going to do? Uh-oh! Your entire world may have been upended and your family finances are now in a questionable state. Hmmmm. How are you feeling about your decision now?
